Romance is a perennial magical intention. And if you want to draw a new relationship, bring even more magic into an existing one, or just drum up your deep inner awareness of life being a passionate and romantic affair, consider creating an altar to one of the following divinities.
The perennial love goddess of the Greek pantheon, Aphrodite appears as a mermaid or a golden-haired beauty in a sea shell. Also known as “foam born,” her mother is none other than the Ocean herself. Invoke her to magnetize or increase romance and passion, and to awaken your own inner love goddess. Place an image of her on your altar along with one or more of the following offerings: chocolate, a hand mirror, roses, frankincense and myrrh incense, rose perfume.
Like Aphrodite, Adonis also claims non-human parentage: he was born of a myrrh tree. Also like Aphrodite, he is considered the quintessence of masculine attractiveness in the same way she is considered the quintessence of feminine attractiveness. Both Aphrodite and Persephone love Adonis dearly, and his yearly rebirth was a major theme of the Eleusinian Mysteries. A divinity of sensual pleasure and sexuality, he can be invoked to draw or enhance attraction and eros. According to Judika Illes in The Encyclopedia of Spirits, he prefers not to be alone on an altar, so be sure to “Incorporate Aphrodite, Persephone, Astarte, Nymphs, or other spirits onto his altar.” Judika Illes also suggests such offering him sex toys, aphrodisiacs, and/or other sensual and luxurious items and foods.
Oshun is the Yoruban goddess of water, love, romance, abundance, beauty, divination, protection, and magic. Interestingly, like Aphrodite, she sometimes appears as a mermaid. If she decides to grace you with her presence (which she may well do if she approves of your altar), she will happily grant your romance-related wish. Place her image on your altar and surround it with items such as naturally shed peacock feathers, honey (which you must always taste before you offer it to her), cinnamon, oranges, marigolds, and/or chamomile tea.
Freya, the famously beautiful Norse goddess of love, sex, and pleasure, is also the goddess of war, death, and magic…which gives her an interesting twist. Freya is a golden-haired, radiant beauty who can also appear in any form she desires. She rides in a chariot pulled by two giant grey cats. Invoke her for love, beauty, radiance, healing from sexual trauma or heartbreak, and personal power. Along with her image, place items on her altar such as amber, primroses (or any flower, really), perfume, jewelry, and/or love poetry.
Bast (or Bastet) is the Egyptian cat goddess of all things pleasure-related, including love and sex. And, like a cat, she’s very pro-independence – so if you’re wanting to invoke love and romance energy but also to heal old issues related to abuse or codependency, she would be a great divinity to invoke. Along with her image, add offerings such as sun stones, moon stones, ankh images, and anything that smells good, such as essential oil, incense, or perfume.
