Fashion blogs and magazines often inspire us to amass more, more, more. When actually, paring down and simplifying can often be just as satisfying (or even more so!) than a full on shopping spree. Not to mention, the appearance enhancing effects of a clutter-free closet are vast and far reaching. For example, when you open your closet and see only pieces that you look great in and that you love, you:
- Feel more confident
- Feel more focused
- More easily assemble stellar outfits
- Have more time in the day
- Get rid of negative energy in your body and home
As you can see, in the case of closets, less really – literally – is more. Here are some decluttering tips to get you started and some ideas to help you make the most of your purge.
1. Play music that you like to dance to. Why does music make us want to dance? Because it moves our personal energy so much that it makes our physical body want to join in the fun. And decluttering is about moving our personal energy: moving the old and unwanted out, to create room for the new and exciting. So assemble a playlist or Pandora station that makes you want to move, and then clear, clear, clear.
2. Burn incense or diffuse essential oil. Like playing music, this will help move your energy but because scent directly link to your brain and memory, it will move your energy in a more cerebral way by giving you a fresh perspective. Additionally, some scents are especially sensual, and get you out of your head and into your body, so that you can awaken your full body awareness about what you genuinely want to keep and what you want to get rid of. Choose a scent that feels just right: something that you love and that uplifts and invigorates you.
3. Make sure you have a good selection of basic, core pieces. For a long time, I decluttered and decluttered my closet, never understanding why I didn’t ever seem to amass a wardrobe that I felt good about. And then one day, I got it: I didn’t have a good selection of core basics. This meant that I didn’t often wear really good pieces because I didn’t have anything to pair them with. I thought, “I never wear this, so I should get rid of it,” when really I probably would have worn it if only I had a good basic black skirt, a standard trench coat, or the right cut of skinny jeans. So make a list of some basics that the rest of your wardobe can revolve around. If you have them, great. If there are some that you don’t have, make a point of keeping an eye out for them, and keep them in mind (even if you don’t have them yet) as you decide what to keep and what to get rid of.
4. Take everything out. You don’t have to do this every time, but if it’s been a long while since you’ve decluttered and you know that you’re more than overdo, take every single thing out of your closet and dresser. This way, you can give each piece the thought and attention it deserves while starting anew with your organization system. If you love it, wear it, it makes you feel good, and it fits your wardrobe, put it back. If it doesn’t, put it on the “get rid of it” pile.
5. Drink lots of water. Decluttering is dehydrating, and it’s a detox of sorts, so make sure to replenish your fluids and flush your system as you clear.
6. Remember that more isn’t better. Have you ever watched Hoarders? It’s an extreme example, but it illustrates my point well. More isn’t better. Better is better. So get rid of the stuff that feels junky, boring, or unnecessary, and you’ll find that the value of the pieces you choose to keep seems to multiply. Plus, everything is connected, so in the process you’ll be removing negative energy from your home and aura (or personal energy field).
7. Get in the habit of swapping clothes with your stylish friends. I am very lucky to have a girlfriend (Rachel) who throws the best clothing swaps ever. It’s awesome because I don’t have to feel bad about getting rid of perfectly good clothes that I just happened to be tired of when I know that I can exchange them for a bunch of new (to me) clothes for absolutely no money at all, and without harming the environment a smidge…But if you don’t have that girlfriend, you can be that girlfriend (or boy-friend)!
