Then you feel amazing for, say, 24 hours: like you’re walking on rainbows and your skin is glowing and every thought you have is endlessly fascinating.
Aaaaaaand then felt like you were out partying all night. Or at least like you had a couple cocktails or stayed up a few hours too late.
And that, my friend, is what you call a magical hangover.
But what is the magical hangover? And why does it happen? And what do we do about it?
What It Is
Everything is energy, and we are each energy containers and conductors: like human quartz crystals or lightning rods. When we work magic, we are drawing extra energy into our field so we can use it to shape or shift reality in some chosen way. Once we set our intention, we send this energy out into the unified field to bring about the desired shift. Still, even though we send it out, there is a residual glow of extra energy hanging out in our field, like embers after a bonfire. This extra energy is what gives us the 24 hour (give or take) afterglow.
But once that extra, residual glow has dimmed, we feel sort of burned out and used up. Because the leftover energy inspired extra motivation and enthusiasm – perhaps we cleaned the whole house, or went on a rigorous hike, or just got in a lot of animated conversations – so when the energy is gone we feel even more drained than we otherwise would have.
What to Do About It
While a little magical hangover might be inevitable for some of us, it doesn’t ever need to be debilitating. If it is, it simply means we haven’t sufficiently grounded our energy after our magical work. And believe me: even those of us who have been at this magical thing for a while can sometimes make this mistake. (I should know.)
Here are two effective ways to ground your energy after a ritual or spell:
- Lie flat on your back and simply breathe. Feel and sense the abundance of energy in your field like liquid light, falling out of your body and aura like water out of a soaking wet towel. Set the intention to retain your natural amount of energy and to let all the rest go. See/sense this energy/light finding its way down to the core of the planet.
- Squat or kneel down and place your palms flat on the earth or floor. Consciously direct any excess energy in your field through your palms and straight down to the core of the earth. Just as in #1 above, you don’t need to understand this mechanism logically: simply set the intention to retain your everyday energy level, and to release all the rest.
Finally, if you already have a magical hangover because you accidentally neglected to ground sufficiently, spending quality time in nature can help you balance out and recharge. So can taking a sea salt bath and spending time with your cat or dog. It’s also a good idea to eat really fresh, healthy food and drink lots of water.
