Burn & Brew: A Simple Ritual Template to Keep the Magic Alive

Discover a simple daily practice that blends incense and intentional sipping to ground your energy, clear your mind, and keep the magic alive.

Burn and Brew Rituals

I’m so honored to share this excerpt from my dear friend Rhonda Kuykendall-Jabari’s beautiful new book, Burn and Brew Rituals, published by Llewellyn — a book I loved so much that I wrote the foreword. Whether you’re new to ritual practice or looking to deepen the one you already have, Rhonda’s approach is grounding, accessible, and genuinely magical. I hope it inspires you as much as it has inspired me.

Welcome to burn and brew. This is a journey that encourages you to pause, reflect, and reconnect with yourself and your spirit guides through a daily ritual for mindfully burning aromatic incense and brewing a comforting drink of your choice.

It is an invitation to bring sacredness into everyday life, balancing your intentions with the natural rhythms around you.

It is a practical application of the powerful alchemy of scent, taste, and energy work as you work with nature’s elements: resins, herbs, flowers, and roots. It’s a practice that’s designed to ground you, clear your mind, awaken your creativity, and support your healing and manifesting goals. By engaging all five senses, you will discover the beauty and power of creating your own sacred experience every day.

This post will guide you through each step of the burn and brew ritual, from preparing your incense or oils to creating drinks that embody your intentions. Use it as a compass for developing a practice that meets your personal needs.

Prepare Your Spiritual Workspace

This could be your altar, a small table, or any surface that feels right for your practice.

Select Your Incense or Oil

Fragrance lies at the heart of your ritual, infusing your space with energy and focus. Your choice of incense can consecrate the space and help bridge intention and action for a multi-sensory experience. Choose an incense based on the energy you wish to invite. There are no wrong choices, so trust your inner guidance.

I lean toward dry ingredients, mixing them in a small bowl and tossing lightly. You may also use a coffee bean grinder for a more powder-like consistency that will burn evenly. Whether you fire up a single stick or concoct a blend of various aromas, the process of choosing your aroma can be as meditative as the ritual itself, a moment to connect with the energy of each ingredient.

With your tools and ingredients in place, your space is read to support the energy and intention of your practice.

Choose Your Burner

Since I burn mostly loose forms of herbs and resins on charcoal, I prefer a cast-iron cauldron. If you’re burning mostly sticks and cones, a glazed ceramic bowl with about two inches of sand or other base layer is a good option. For essential oil, a diffuser is the way to go.

Start Your Burn

When you’re ready to release the aroma of your ritual incense, use tongs to pass a charcoal disc through a lit flame (a candle, the stove, a lighter, or matches). Once it sparks, place it in your cauldron. When the disc gets hot (a minute or two), it’s time to drop your blend on top. As the smoke rises, take a deep breath and visualize your energy filling the space. Let the fragrance anchor you in the moment, guiding you into a state of focus and presence where your ritual can unfold with grace and purpose.

Choose Your Brew

Burn and Brew Tea

Let your beverage be part of the ritual. If you’re seeking relaxation, reach for a calming cup of chamomile, lavender, or lemon balm tea to guide you gently inward. Craving focus? Coffee can sharpen the senses and bring clarity to your thoughts. Prefer comfort? Hot chocolate wraps you in a cocoon of sweetness, nurturing the spirit and soothing the heart. Whatever you sip, let the energy of your chosen drink–and your intention–support the sacred work you’re about to begin.

Infuse with Intention

Burn and Brew Intention

Hold the glass or mug in both hands and raise it to inhale the warmth and aroma. Mindfully speak your intention into the cup, repeating a few times.

Sip

Burn and Brew sip

With your drink in hand, relish the moment. Continue to breathe deeply as you sip slowly and mindfully.

Reflect

Burn and Brew reflect

As your ritual draws to a close, take a few moments to rest in quiet reflection. This gentle pause grounds your intention and allows you to fully embrace the sense of completion and fulfillment your practice has brought.

Sit quietly and notice how you feel. Has your energy shifted? Do you sense a change in your mood or state of mind? Let yourself observe without judgement. If it feels right, jot down your reflections in a journal. These notes are a meaningful record of your journey, helping you revisit the insights and growth that emerge from each ritual.

Close

Make Meditation Enjoyable

End your ritual with care. Extinguish any remaining burn elements and clear your space, honoring the energy you’ve cultivated. Give thanks for the healing and unseen support you’ve received. If it feels natural, speak a closing phrase, such as “I give thanks to all energies that protected and supported my highest and greatest good during this ritual. The ritual is now complete.” Or just take a moment to silently express gratitude for the time and intention you’ve given to yourself. In this way, you carry the energy of your practice into the day, immersed in your intention and filled with a sense of peace.

Burn and brew is a moment of self-care. It’s where fire meets water, where breath meets intention, and where the unseen becomes felt. Every scent you release into the air, every sip you take with purpose, becomes part of a larger energy exchange, one that begins at your altar but ripples far beyond it.

  1. As I get older I appreciate simplicity more and more, and realize more and more that the “little in-between moments” matter so much! This is a lovely way to honor cultivation of the simple and to reap impact from what can often be mundane and rushed – thank you. 💚
