Bagua Area Overview: The Love and Marriage Area

Also known as “the love corner,” or “the love and marriage area,” this feng shui area has to do with receptivity, sensuality, and a harmonious love relationship.

Ahh, everyone’s favorite. Or second favorite – many prefer the wealth corner. I, personally, love them all equally in different ways, but if I had to pick one that everyone seems to be the most obsessed with, it would be this one. This, no doubt, is because our desire for love, intimacy, and partnership is such a fundamental aspect of our species.

Also known as “the love corner,” or “the love and marriage area,” this area has to do with receptivity and sensuality. When we are receptive, open, and emotional, we naturally draw a partner and are able to connect with them deeply and, for the most part, harmoniously.

In the I Ching, this area is aligned with “receptive earth,” and the natural image associated with it would be a fertile field, or an open meadow in late summer. When this area is activated and flowing, our relationship situation flourishes in an ideal way, wherever we happen to be on our romantic path. For example, we might begin to fall in love with ourselves, heal from a past breakup, open up to dating, meet someone we really connect with, or harmonize a relationship that we’re already in. Also, because feng shui aligns us with our most ideal state, whatever that may be (i.e. it doesn’t provide band-aid cures), it might also help clarify relationship challenges – or relationships! – that we’re ready to let go of in order to open up to a more ideal perspective and way of being in the world.

In your home, the colors associated with this area are Valentine’s Day colors: all shades of red, pink, and white. Additionally, other warm or earthy colors can be good, such as warm purple, orange, terra cotta, and even some yellows and browns. Ideally, though, there’s some representation of passion, such as a deep red or pink, or even something that brings in the fire element in a different way, such as a faux fur throw or an animal print. (Representations of animals bring in the fire element in a similar way to the color red.)

Pairs of things and images of romance are also ideal for this area, such as a pair of rose quartz hearts or a picture of a romantic couple doing the tango or in a loving embrace. Pairs of animals, fruit, or trees can also be good imagery, as long as they give you the feeling of romantic love in some way. If you choose an image of a couple, make sure that they appear happy and into each other. Sometimes, when you really look deeply, you can see that one pair in the couple is frowning or looking away, or maybe if you choose a pair of trees, one of them is leaning away. These little subtle things may seem small, but they are the stuff of feng shui: the secret language of the intuition and subconscious that defines the patterns and qualities of our lives.

If you can and it’s appropriate, create an affirmation of a romantic nook for two in this area: for example a loveseat, a romantic dining table for two, etc.

If your bedroom is in the romance area, yay! How perfect for you. Make extra sure that you create the space for two: if you have one nightstand and one lamp, have two. If you have one chair in the corner, have two, etc.

If this area lies outside your home, you might want to add two lamp posts or a statue of a couple to symbolically complete the space. Or, you might bury two rose quarts hearts or two quartz points instead of one. If you need to complete the space on the inside of your home, you might hang a picture depicting a warm, receptive meadow to create the illusion of space, or accentuate each love/marriage corner of the home with a couple of rose quartz hearts.
