Find Balance at Mabon: A Simple Fall Equinox Ritual for Harmony and Joy
Establish inner equilibrium as the sun moves into Libra.
Mabon—also known as the Fall Equinox—is one of the two points in the year when day and night are of equal length. It’s a sacred time of balance, reflection, and renewal.
In perfect cosmic synchronicity, the Autumn Equinox also marks the moment the sun moves into Libra, the zodiac sign of balance and harmony. As an air sign, Libra energy sweeps in like a crisp fall breeze, clearing away old patterns and making space for beauty, clarity, and peace.
And this year brings an extra layer of magic: in 2025, Mabon and Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) fall on the same day. Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on September 22nd, offering us a chance to align with both the turning of the seasons and the sweetness of a brand-new spiritual cycle.
If you’re ready to invite equilibrium, here’s a simple yet powerful Mabon ritual you can do to honor the Autumn Equinox, connect with the elements, and discover greater balance within yourself.
(Southern Hemisphere folks, this spell will also work just fine for the Spring Equinox, but you can also find all the Ostara stuff here.)

Step One: Cleanse Your Energy
Prepare for your ritual with a shower or bath. As the water flows over you or you soak, imagine worries and mundane concerns dissolving and washing away. Breathe deeply, noticing the scent of your soap and the feel of the water on your skin.
Dry off with a clean towel and put on light-colored or white clothing to symbolize clarity and renewal.
Step Two: Create Your Sacred Circle
Find a quiet spot—outdoors or in—where you can sit undisturbed. Using a compass (your phone works fine), locate the four cardinal directions. Place symbols of the elements at each point to form a small circle:
-
South (Fire): A jar candle
-
West (Water): A bowl, jar, or chalice of water
-
North (Earth): A stone or a potted plant
Step Three: Align with the Elements
Safely light your incense and candle. Sit or stand in the center of your circle facing east.
Take some deep breaths and continue to breathe consciously until you feel relaxed and present.
Soak in the elemental balance that surrounds you.
Trust that whatever energy you need most is naturally flowing into your aura to establish holistic harmony and well-being.
Sense:
- The incense and air element lifting your spirits and clarifying your mind.
- The candle and fire element fueling your excitement and getting you fired up for positive change.
- The water and water element soothing you and cleansing your soul.
- The plant or stone and earth element calming you and bringing you down to earth.
As the elements flow around you, sense the presence of the fifth element—Spirit—weaving everything together and filling you with joy.
Step Four: Call in Balance and Joy
Speak these words (or your own variation):
Great Goddess, Great God, Holy Mystery, All That Is—I call you.
Bless me at this sacred turning of the year, and help me bless all I touch.
As balance comes to me, may I carry balance into the world.
Bring balance to my mind. Bring balance to my body. Bring balance to my spirit.
And on the wings of balance, may I discover joy.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Blessed be. And so it is.
Sit quietly, smiling as you feel the harmony you’ve invoked. When ready, extinguish your candle and incense, and gently take down your circle.
It is done.

I’ve developed a ‘chili habit’ for the equinoxes. For Autumn, it’s Pumpkin Chili – the pumpkin for harvest season, and the beans are an equal mix of black and white beans. I also do a little extra spicy, invoking that sun energy as we head into dark, rainy days in Oregon. There’s always enough to freeze and pull out in the winter when we need the balance or the sun energy.
Alesia, nice! What kind of chili for Ostara?
Chili verde, spring green, still with the equal mix of black and white beans
Ahh, brilliant.
I have my moments.
And then I have 2 dreams in a row that show me it’s time to reinvest in protection spells and rituals…
