Cleanse, bless, and protect your home at Samhain season with this beautiful and fragrant ritual.
As we approach Samhain (AKA Halloween), the veil thins.
This is the veil between seen and unseen, known and unknown, living and dead.
Naturally, this makes Samhain season a time of great magical power.
As the Wheel of the Year continues to turn toward its darkest and coldest point, you may find that it feels natural to bless and protect your home during Samhain season.
The following home blessing ritual has been adapted for Samhain from one in my book, You Are Magical.
Before you begin, physically clean your home and then open all the windows and clear the energy in your home with sweetgrass smoke. You can do this by lighting a sweetgrass braid so that it’s smoking like incense and wafting the smoke around each area and room of your home. (Be sure to carry a dish beneath it to catch any burning embers.) Sweetgrass will not only remove negative energy, it will also call in loving ancestors and other sweet spirits of light.
(Or you can use a smudge spray if you’d prefer not to double up on the smoke. Either way, be careful if you have pets or small children.)
Ingredients
- Fresh petals from 12 white or antique roses (in a basket or bowl)
- 1 stick of copal incense
- A lighter or matches
- A dish or plate
During Samhain season (October 1st-31st), assemble the ingredients near your altar, in a central location, or another location that feels appropriate (such as the fireplace or entry). Sit or stand with your spine straight, close your eyes, and take some deep breaths to center yourself.
When you feel ready, invoke the Divine in a way that feels powerful for you, and ask for a strong infusion of love and light to fill your home. Also speak words from your heart about what types of energies and conditions you’re calling into your space. Then feel gratitude, knowing that your words have been heard and are being acted upon. Speaking aloud or whispering, say thank you.
While holding the receptacle containing the rose petals, move in a generally clockwise direction around the inside perimeter of your home, scattering rose petals across every doorway and windowpane that borders the outside. Repeat on any additional floors.
Next, safely light the incense and hold it over the dish or plate in such a way that you’ll be sure to catch any burning embers. Move in a generally clockwise direction throughout each room and area of your space, wafting the smoke around generously as you go. (Copal helps remove stuck or wayward spirits and discourages unhappy ghosts from lingering or coming around.)
Safely extinguish the incense.
Stand again in the location where you assembled the ingredients, and feel gratitude once again for all the divine energy you’ve just successfully called in. Once more, audibly say thank you.
Silently or aloud, ask the Divine to surround your home in a protective sphere of golden-white light. See or sense this sphere cocooning your home in positive energy and love. Feel even more gratitude and say thank you a final time.
Leave the rose petals for at least twenty-four hours, and then return them to the earth by releasing them in a natural body of water or placing them near the base of a tree. Feel free to burn the rest of the partially burned incense for any future magical or aromatherapeutic purposes.
Enjoy the sweet and sacred energy you’ve called into your space.
