How and Why to Call on Saint Vincent Ferrer for Help with Household Repairs
Saints love it when you promise them things.
Or, let’s say they respond well to promises. Provided the promises are in alignment with the saint’s goals and pleasing to the saint’s personality. At least, this has been my experience on several notable occasions.
Most recently, I had this experience with Saint Vincent Ferrer.
See, there was this leak under the sink. A handyman had come by to fix it multiple times, assuring us it was fixed each time. And yet, it persisted.
So, I did what anyone would do in this situation: I googled “Patron saint of plumbing.”
Then, I lit a candle, and prayed Saint Vincent Ferrer’s novena 9 times (I will offer details on this practice below), each time requesting that he help fix the leak by the end of the day, and each time promising that if he did so, I would write him a blog post to help spread the word about his miraculous intervention.
And! Well! Here we are. Leak was indeed fixed by the end of the day.
(By whom, you ask? By my husband. He watched some YouTube videos and figured out what to do.)

Who Is Saint Vincent Ferrer?
Alive during the 14th and 15th centuries, Saint Vincent Ferrer was a mega star. A native of Valencia (a Roman province of Britain), he was an advisor to kings, popes, and world leaders. He was a touring preacher and a public miracle worker – a total celebrity.
From a young age, he studied theology and philosophy, and gave generously to the poor. Early in his career as a religious devotee, he began having visions that accurately foretold the future.
When he preached all over Europe, it was said many times that it didn’t matter what language his listeners spoke – they would always understand him perfectly.
He became known for providing solutions to stubborn disagreements within governments and for miraculously healing the sick and injured.
Even when he was wildly popular, he never indulged in luxury for himself, sleeping on straw and continuing his practice of handing over all alms and donations to the poor.
Why is Saint Vincent Ferrer the Patron Saint of Plumbing and Home Repairs?
The following quote is attributed to Saint Vincent Ferrer:
“I pray without ceasing [to] the Lord…that He send good workmen into His harvest.”
Did he mean plumbers and other home repairpeople? Nope! (Was there even indoor plumbing in the 13 and 1400s? Google tells me not for another 400 or so years.)
No, he meant clergy. He was talking about church officials. “Workmen” and “harvest” were metaphors.
Still, the sentiment carries over, and the quote is likely why he is invoked for help with home repairs.
In reading about his life, I was struck by Saint Vincent Ferrer’s work ethic. He worked nonstop and he genuinely cared about the quality of his work. Additionally, he had a genius for collaboration and facilitating positive group structure. I can see how these talents and aims would carry over into helping with home repairs – quality work, solid construction, and efficient usage.
How Do I Invoke Saint Vincent Ferrer for Help with Plumbing and Home Repairs?
Here’s what I did, and it worked like a charm.
First, I lit a candle.
Then, I prayed the following prayer nine times, each time speaking words from my heart about what I needed help with at the fill in the blank portion. I was sure to include a deadline (for me it was the end of the day), I added in a promise that I would write a blog post in Saint Vincent’s honor if the deadline were met. (Which it was.)
For your own promise, you might also offer to spread the word of Saint Vincent’s miraculous blessings, or you could offer to make a donation to a charity that constructs or provides housing to those in need. Or, it would also be appropriate to offer any sort of donation that supports people in need of housing, money, or food.
Here is the prayer….
Novena to Saint Vincent Ferrer
O Saint Vincent Ferrer, our guardian, because God our eternal Father has blessed you with an inexhaustible fountain of grace and blessing, we beg you to hear our prayers and to assist us with your powerful intercession which is even more effective now that you are in heaven than it was when you were on earth.
Full of confidence in your mercy and compassion, we kneel in prayer before you, and commend to your powerful intercession all our needs, those of our families, our friends, relatives, and especially
(here’s where you ask for the help you need and make your promise)
Glorious Saint Vincent Ferrer, let not our hope and confidence in your protection be deceived.
Intercede for us before the throne of God. Watch over our eternal welfare.
If our trials and tribulations in this world multiply, may they serve to give us spiritual joy and happiness.
If God will only grant us the grace of ever increasing patience to the end that we may save our souls.
Amen (or Blessed be)
After you try this, please come back and let me know what happens!
