Can you feel that November 1st is it’s own kind of new year? It’s the beginning of the dark half of the year and the end of the cycle of the harvest. And it’s the time of year when the veil between the worlds (of form/spirit, seen/unseen, known/unknown) is the thinnest. As such, it might be said that we have access to a deeper level of truth: we can go beyond the illusion of time and connect with the realm of the eternal. This gives us the opportunity to cleanse, bless, and renew ourselves, our homes, and our lives in a very effective and heartfelt way. It’s also the ideal time to steady ourselves for the holiday season, and to begin to settle down, “cozy in,” and go within.
Here’s a simple blessing to flow with these energies and maximize their benefits in your life. You will need: a bunch of fresh rosemary, a half cup of sea salt, a braid of sweetgrass, and some hemp twine.
After cleaning and straightening your house, bathe in water into which you’ve added a half cup of sea salt and nine sprigs of rosemary.
After drying off, dress in clean, comfortable clothing.
Clap loudly, rattle, or drum around the perimeter of each room and area in a counter-clockwise direction, paying special attention to the corners.
Smudge with a braid of sweetgrass in each room and area while moving in a clockwise direction and holding a small dish or plate beneath it to catch any burning embers.
Tie three sprigs of rosemary together with hemp twine for the front door, each doorway to the outside, and each door inside the house as you chant:
This is a beautiful new time.
This is a blessed new time.
This is a lucky new time.
I release the old! I welcome in the new!
Attach one rosemary bundle to the outside of the front door, and one to each door in the house. Leave them up for one moon cycle, then place near the base of a tree, release in a body of moving water, or place in the compost heap.
Optional: Mist the house with spring water into which you’ve added 10-20 drops of essential oil of rosemary.
