“You must push down in order to rise up.”
-Anodea Judith in Chakras: Seven Keys to Awakening and Healing the Energy Body
As you may know, chakras are wheels of energy residing along your spinal column.
Each chakra corresponds with a certain area of the body as well as aspects of your psychology, emotions, and holistic wellbeing.
The root chakra, also known as the first chakra or muladhara, resides at your tailbone, or the region of the body that makes contact with the earth, floor, or chair when you’re sitting with your spine straight.
You can imagine it as a horizontally spinning, ruby red wheel of light that connects your personal energy field with the energy field of the earth in order to nourish, stabilize, and ground you.
We rely on our root chakra to feel safe and at home in the physical world. As such, without a clear and healthy root chakra, all areas of our life suffer.
While it’s a good idea to clear and activate your chakras regularly, your root chakra may need extra healing and activation if you feel chronically anxious, ungrounded, unsupported, scattered, bored, concerned that others are out to get you, or stuck in a feeling that it’s you against the world.
Additionally, you may want to pay extra attention to your root chakra during times when you are constantly on the computer, reading, studying, debating, or otherwise spending a good portion of your time in your head and the mental realm (as opposed to your body and the sensual realm).
Here are three reliable, powerful ways to heal and activate the root chakra.
1. Walk barefoot on the earth.
Just five minutes of walking barefoot on sand, soil, or grass has amazing benefits, not the least of which is clearing and activating the root chakra.
In Earthing: Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth’s Surface Electrons, Gaeton Chevalier and his co-researchers write, “Throughout history, humans mostly walked barefoot…Through direct contact…the ground’s abundant free electrons were able to enter the body, which is electrically conductive. Through this mechanism, every part of the body could equilibrate with the electrical potential of the Earth, thereby stabilizing the electrical environment of all organs, tissues, and cells.”
2. Dance slowly, with a lot of hip action.
Synching your body with heartfelt music that you love is a moving meditation that does wonders for your sense of grounded aliveness.
When you plant your feet and stretch your hips in circles that describe (and possibly expand) their full range of motion, your root chakra and lower organs will receive a healing massage.
Choose slow, sensual music and only move your body in ways that it wants to move. Your root chakra will thank you in as little as a single song.
3. Inhale grounding, woody scents such as patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood, or cedar.
While patchouli is my personal go-to scent for instant grounding, I know not everyone is a fan. And anyway, vetiver, sandalwood, and cedar work just as well.
This is the best option for when you’re out and about and you can’t exactly take off your shoes or start rotating your hips in slow, sensual circles. Simply remove the lid of a bottle of essential oil and inhale.
You can also diffuse essential oil(s), burn incense, or choose lotion or fragrance blends that include any (or all) of these scents.
