Powerful protection magic from iconic witch and author Judika Illes.
When I was a young witch, I came across Judika Illes’s Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells, and my life was forever changed.
To this day, I admire Judika so much. And while I am writing my own magical books, I refer to her books more than any others. Encyclopedia of Witchcraft, Encyclopedia of Spirits, Encyclopedia of Mystics, Saints, and Sages – all dogeared and within reach. Her work is truly a treasure, to me and so many others.
So, you can imagine my delight when I received this brand new, small-but-mighty deck of protection spells, descriptively called…Protection Spells:
The next time I think to myself, “Hmm. I need a protection spell. But which?” I can pull this little baby out and find just the right one in seconds.
I’m delighted to share 9 of these spells with you here today.
How did I choose which ones? I drew nine cards from the deck! Naturally.
But before we get to those protection spells, check out the first card, with a succinct intro and spellcasting tip:
“The world may be filled with dangers, but it is also filled with ancient and powerful forces that serve as antidotes and protective devices. These magical forces include crystals, herbs, amulets, sacred beings, even colors and numbers. Magic spells enable us to harness these forces for our own benefit…
TIP: for successful spell casting, as you cast your spells, visualize their success. Visualize yourself strong, happy, and safe, your goals realized.”

Protection Spell #1: Aloe Vera Protection
“Living aloe vera plants do more than soothe sunburn. Their leaves, filled with healing, cooling gel, are shaped like spears. Keep healthy potted aloe vera plants on your windowsills, by your doors, and on your altars to provide spiritual protection, especially in situations where emotions, spirits, or anything else needs cooling down.”

Protection Spell #2: Rice
“Rice is believed to absorb negativity, malice, and any kind of wickedness or evil intent. Fill an open jar with dry, uncooked white rice and place it outside, next to your front door or any other place perceived as vulnerable. Replace it with fresh raw rice weekly. Dispose of old rice outside your home. Do not bring it back inside, cook it, eat it, or give it to another person to eat.”

Protection Spell #3: The Number of Protection
“Five, which corresponds to the number of fingers on each hand, is the number most associated with magical and spiritual protection. Hand-shaped amulets, such as the hamsa, transmit this protective energy.”

Protection Spell #4: Egyptian Goddess Guardian Spirits
“Images of these four goddesses were used to protect coffins, sarcophagi, and canonic jars in ancient Egypt. All are great sorceresses. They guarded pharaohs. Ask them to protect you, too. Modern statues are readily available; arrange them in a circle with each goddess looking outward. You can also summon their help by murmuring this ancient invocation with intention:
Isis is my mother
Nephthys is my nurse,
Neith is behind me.
Selket is before me.”

Protection Spell #5: Cayenne and Flaxseed Spell
” 1. Blend cayenne powder with flaxseed.
2. Place the resulting powder in a small pouch or box, such as a matchbox.
3. Hide the pouch or box within your home, focusing on areas that feel vulnerable, a little creepy, or where fights, tension, or unhappy experiences have occurred.
4. Reputedly the secret presence of the powder will repel evil.
5. Create and hide as many of the powder-filled pouches or boxes as you feel is necessary.”

Protection Spell #6: Protection Psalms
“Biblical psalms have been incorporated into protection magic for over two millennia. A traditional method of combatting anxiety and fear is to recite the psalms, one by one, in order. Proceed to read the book of Psalms, starting at the very beginning with Psalm 1. If you get to the end (Psalsm 150), begin again. Keep reading until you feel safer.
Pay attention: if you are interrupted, take heed of where the interruption occurred. This may be a clue as to the nature of your danger or its solution.”

Protection Spell #7: Kwan Yin
“Her name means ‘she who hears the cries of the world.’
Buddhism’s Lady of Compassion, Kwan Yin is a bodhisattva, meaning that, although she achieved nirvana, she refuses to leave this world as long as anyone is suffering. Kwan Yin has vowed to come to the aid of anyone who calls out her name in their hour of need.
It is sufficient to call her name to seek her protection.”

Protection Spell #8: Joan of Arc
“Joan of Arc fought fiercely for what she believed was right. Since her death at age nineteen, Joan has emerged as a powerful guardian.
Request her protection. You will need nine small white or gray candles.
1. Write the name or names of those for whom you seek protection on a piece of paper and place it under one of the candles.
2. Burn the candle while requesting Joan’s assistance.
3. Repeat eight times, burning one candle each day with a new petition paper.”

Protection Spell #9: Protection Incense
“Benzoin, copal, dragon’s blood, frankincense, and myrrh: these five exotic resins are among the most powerfully protective magical ingredients.
1. Grind small pieces of each resin together in a mortar and pestle, focusing on your desired goals as you pulverize them.
2. Burn them as incense. Gently pass the smoke around you for a personal cleansing.
3. The number 5 enhances the power of the incense, but if you are unable to obtain all five ingredients, use as many as you can. Even just one will provide spiritual protection.”
