Celebrate Lammas with these soul-nourishing practices.
The Wheel turns once again, and here in the Northern Hemisphere, the beginning of August brings us to Lughnasadh, also known as Lammas—the first harvest festival and a sacred time of gathering, gratitude, and transformation.
(Southern Hemisphere friends, check out all the Imbolc stuff here.)
While this cross-quarter sabbat traditionally honors abundance and the fruits of the earth, it also offers a profound opportunity for emotional healing and soulful reflection.
This Wednesday (two days before Lughnasadh) Chiron—the wounded healer—goes retrograde, nudging us inward to tend old emotional wounds and discover new layers of strength and self-compassion. This celestial movement invites us to revisit the places in our hearts that still feel tender. Not to wallow, but to find the blessings and wisdom hidden in our pain. Combined with the generous, golden energy of Lughnasadh, it’s a powerful time to nourish our mental health and rekindle our inner light.
Here are seven gentle, magical practices for emotional healing and renewal at Lughnasadh.

1. Gather the Harvest of Your Emotions
Just as we honor the physical harvest—grains, fruits, flowers—we can also lovingly acknowledge the emotional harvest we’ve cultivated throughout the year. What feelings have bloomed within you? Which ones still need attention or integration?
Choose a peaceful place in nature or by a sunny window to sit quietly with your heart. Relax and breathe consciously. Let your emotions rise. Acknowledge them and give them space to just be. Celebrate your resilience and the beauty of all your moods.
2. Perform a Ritual of Release and Renewal
As the land barely begins to intimate its slow shift toward autumn, we’re reminded that release is part of the cycle of abundance. A simple fire ritual can help you let go of stagnant emotions or outdated stories.
Write down what you’re ready to release—old grief, limiting beliefs, recurring patterns, heartaches—and safely burn the paper in a fireproof vessel or cauldron. An outdoor fire pit or campfire will also work. (Whatever option you go with, be careful!) Let the smoke carry your burdens away and feel your spirit lighten.

3. Bask in a Healing Meditation
At sunrise or anytime the sun feels strong but not overpowering, sit in stillness and invite the sunlight and the radiant energy of the season to flood your body and aura.
Sense the sunlight enveloping you and soaking into your chakras, organs, and cells —warming, soothing, and energizing every part of your being. Feel the steadiness of the Earth below, anchoring you in safety and presence. Breathe deeply, drawing energy from the Earth and the Sun, and imagine that energy infusing your emotional body with strength, clarity, and peace.
4. Cleanse with the Water Element
Water is the element of the emotions, and Lughnasadh is a beautiful time to invoke its healing flow.
Draw a ritual bath with sea salt, lavender, and/or rose petals. As you soak, imagine the water gently loosening and dissolving emotional residue. Let your breath deepen. Let your tears come, if they need to.

5. Connect with Nature and the Elements
Lughnasadh reminds us that we are part of the natural world—that its cycles mirror our own.
Go outside, preferably somewhere with water. Sit down. Relax. Notice each element in turn:
🌍 Earth in the soil and stones
🌬️ Air in the breeze and birdsong
🔥 Fire in the sun’s warm rays
💧 Water in a natural body of water or human made water feature (like a fountain or birdbath)
🌟 Spirit in the pulse of life that connects it all
Continue cycling through your awareness of each element in turn. After a few minutes, you will notice a transcendent awareness and sense of interconnection arise. (This is a wonderful practice to do any time you feel stressed out.)
6. Create a Healing Altar
Build a small altar or sacred space for emotional healing. Include items that feel soothing to your spirit—rose quartz, blue lace agate, chamomile, spearmint, or anything else that brings you comfort.
Since this is a harvest festival, add seasonal fruits, wild grasses, or local flowers to your altar to anchor your healing in the energy of the Earth’s abundance.

7. Journal for Emotional Clarity and Self-Discovery
Every time I journal, I’m reminded just how powerful and clarifying it is. Writing things down is like shining a torch into the shadowy corners of the heart—what once felt scary, confusing, or overwhelming can suddenly feel manageable and clear.
Here are some Lughnasadh-themed journal prompts to explore:
-
What emotional challenges have I moved through since November 1st of last year?
-
Which feelings are still lingering in my body or heart?
-
What would healing look or feel like right now?
-
How can I best support my mental and emotional well-being?
-
Where can I let the sunlight in?
