Make Your November Extra Magical with These Fun Rituals, Recipes, and Rewarding Activities
November has a unique and wonderful magic all its own: it’s got a grounded, minimalist flavor that can help us clear our heads and stay focused on what really matters.
Samhain/Halloween is over, so many of us have some spooky decorations to remove. But Christmas/Hanukkah/Winter Solstice is still a ways away, so it’s not time yet for all the hustle, bustle, and brightly-colored clutter that have been known to surround the holiday. Of course, Thanksgiving is a celebration of abundance, but it’s less about accumulation and more about the simple things like home, loved ones, and (of course) food.
Oh, and it’s the eleventh month! As you may know, eleven is a very special number to many of us New Agey folks (including me).
Speaking of eleven, here are eleven ways you can make your November extra magical this year.
1. Put a Rosemary Bundle in Every Room
Fresh rosemary is cleansing, energizing, stimulating, and clarifying to the mind. And it goes so well with the beginning of November! Gather some from a garden or grocery store, then bless it in bring sunlight while infusing it with the intention to bless your home with present moment mindfulness, serenity, and joy. With hemp twine, tie up a small bundle for each room, as well as the front door. Then hang them or place them strategically and imagine your entire home being filled with buzzing blessings, calm clarity, and piquant positivity. (On or above doors is a good idea to bless everyone as they pass through the threshold.)
2. Bake These Yummy Jam Bars
My cousin Emily of the band Survival Guide is an amazing cook, and baked goods are among her specialties. She’s also really talented at identifying good recipes. When I asked her for a recipe for November, she told me she’s planning to try these jam bars from Tartine in the very near future. Perhaps you’d like to try them too!
P.S. to make them magical, direct your hands toward the oven while they’re baking and call on Divine Energy to fill them with golden white light. Imagine them being filled with this light and also summon the energies of sweetness, abundance, laughter, and love.
Ingredients
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/3 cup smooth almond butter
2 tbsp brown rice syrup or maple syrup
1 1/2 cup rolled oats
1 cup almond flour
1 cup oat flour
6 tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 cup + 2 tbsp jam
1 tsp lemon juice
pinch of sea salt
sliced almonds (optional)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9X13 baking pan with parchment paper. Combine the coconut oil, almond butter, and brown rice syrup or maple syrup in a large bowl. Using a wooden spoon, mix well.
Add the rolled oats, almond and oat flowers, sugar, baking powder, salt, vanilla and almond extracts and cinnamon to the almond butter mixture and stir until a soft dough forms. Divide the dough into thirds. Press two-thirds of the dough into the bottom of the prepared pan and reserve the rest for the topping.
Stir together the jam, lemon juice and salt, then spread the mixture evenly over the bottom crust. Crumble the remaining 1/3 dough over the jam filling. Scatter optional sliced almonds on top.
Bake the jam bars until golden brown around the edges, about 35 minutes (slightly overdone is better than too pale). Let the pastry cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into bars. The bars will keep, well-wrapped, at room temp for up to 4 days, or longer in the fridge.
3. Sponsor a Rescued Turkey from Farm Sanctuary
4. Work Kitchen Witchery All Month Long
Whether you’re preparing an entire meal or a single dish, Thanksgiving is the perfect time to practice kitchen witchery by infusing your food with love and good intentions. But why not do that all November long? What could be cozier than making all your recipes into rituals and all your meals into magic? Simply light a candle while you cook, send positive feelings toward the food as you visualize it glowing with light, and keep in mind the magical properties of the ingredients you choose.
5. Watch Addams Family Values
Can you believe it’s been THIRTY YEARS since the release of Addams Family Values? Yet somehow it seems even more relevant than ever. While it’s a sequel, it was more well-received than its predecessor. And here’s something you might not remember: it’s set in November! As if we needed another reason to revisit this feel good black comedy.
6. Do This Functional Abundance Ritual
If you’re crazy like I am, you know how divine it can be to clean out your kitchen cupboards and refrigerator. Even if you don’t love it like I do, you can make it somewhat more fun by making a ritual out of it that will both lift the vibration in your space and clear the way for abundance to flow into your life. To do so, light a stick of rosemary or sage incense as well as a white candle, and let them safely burn somewhere in your kitchen. Then take everything out of your cupboards and fridge, one shelf at a time. Be sure to clean the shelf before you replace anything, and then, only replace what is not expired and what you definitely plan to eat. Keep a box especially for food that is unopened, non-perishable, and not expired. (Of course, dispose of the other unwanted food as responsibly as possible.) Then call on Divine Energy to bless the food in the box with the energies of abundance and luck, and donate it to a food bank or canned food drive.
7. Find the Beauty in Minimalism
November is an excellent time to let go of the extras and to find the degree of minimalism that makes you feel most comfortable. (We’re all different – there’s no one size fits all!) Clearing clutter, cleaning, and clearing the space helps you clear the way for clarity and to create the space for the things you want to experience in the beautiful new cycle ahead. 8. Do a Card Reading
9. Make Fragrant Herb Sachets
You know what else feels perfect for November? Tucking some dried herbs into simple muslin bags, then placing the sachets in dresser drawers, bathroom cupboards, and anywhere else you’d like to bless with the scent of herbs. If you don’t already know what herbs you’d like to use, here’s a potpourri recipe from The Naturally Clean Home that’s totally perfect for fall:
2 cups dried apple slices
1 cup each bay leaves and sage
1/2 cup each chopped, unpeeled ginger root and whole cloves
Eight 1-inch cinnamon sticks
10. Drink Pumpkin Martinis
I adore this pumpkin martini recipe from tasty-yummies.com. I will say that I cut the amount of vodka in half so I can taste more creamy pumpkin and less alcohol, but you may prefer to leave it as it is. Decadent? Yes! But remember that coconut milk has plenty of health benefits. So does cinnamon. And so does pleasure!
11. Drink Chai
Coffee is great and so is tea, but chai feels extra magical for November. Magically, all its ingredients possess unique properties that soothe, uplift, and attune us to the frequencies of happiness, abundance, and love. Plus, chai is so good for you! I especially love Blue Lotus Chai, which comes in powder form and which simply requires a milk product and sweetener. It’s so much more economical than liquid concentrates, and just as delicious.
