Call clear, vibrant, positive energy in your home and your life with these simple space clearing techniques.
Space clearing, also known as energy clearing, is a way of cleansing the vibes so that it feels great to be in your home.
After all, energy may not be visible to the naked eye, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there! Almost everyone can feel it when (for example) a room has been shut up for a while, or when something intense has recently happened in a house, or when they’re in the home of a couple who is very in love.
That’s why space clearing – i.e. cleansing and fine-tuning the invisible energy of your home – can have a powerful effect on your mood, energy levels, and life conditions. Naturally, bright, buoyant energy in your home positively affects everything else in your life, including your prosperity, success, and relationships.
Here are 5 easy steps to clearing the space in your home.
Space Clearing Step 1: Clear Clutter
Nothing lifts the vibe in your home like getting rid of everything you don’t love, use or need.
If you’re overwhelmed by this prospect or don’t know where to start, this post has got you covered.
…And if you’re pretty sure you’ve got a good excuse about why you’re going to skip this step, do yourself a favor and watch this video.
Space Clearing Step 2: Clean
Physically cleaning your home also energetically cleans your home. You can intensify this effect by setting the intention to clear away negativity right along with the dust and grime. And if you’re an essential oil person, this is a great opportunity to use up your essential oils before they spoil: add a few drops of spearmint, peppermint, lavender, cedar, sage, or clary sage to your cleaning products or mop water to ramp up the energy clearing factor. Or even better, make your own cleaning products.
Space Clearing Step 3: Clear with Sound
Do you have a drum? A chime? A bell? A rattle? If not, no problem: you can clap your hands or bang a wooden spoon on a pan. To clear the space with sound, move in a counterclockwise direction through each room and area of your space. (Counterclockwise is the direction that unwinds and unbinds.) As you do so, set the intention to disperse and dissolve any and all stuck or heavy energy from your space. Pay special attention to the corners, the dark areas, and anywhere else you might imagine energy could get stuck. Feel, imagine, and sense the sound unsticking formerly stagnant energy and replacing it with harmonious, flowing energy.
Space Clearing Step 4: Clear with Sage
While a bundle of dried white sage is perhaps the best known smoke cleansing tool, there are plenty of other options, such as desert sage, frankincense, mugwort, or fragrant wood sticks from the palo santo tree. For fire safety, while cleansing with sage (or another botanical) be sure to carry a small dish or plate to catch any burning embers, and again move in a counterclockwise direction throughout each room or area.
Just to be clear: make sure the sage bundle is smoking like incense, not burning like a log on a fire.
For those with smoke sensitivities (or an extra sensitive fire alarm), a smudge spray is a wonderful (and just as powerful) alternative to smoke. (Provided you don’t have pets running around.) Make your own space clearing spray by placing a 8-10 drops of space clearing essential oil in a mister, shaking well, and misting the space. Space clearing essential oils include sage, eucalyptus, cedar, spearmint, lavender, palo santo, pine, and frankincense.
Space Clearing Step 5: Bless
Now that you’ve purified the space of the energy you don’t want, it’s time to call in the energy you do want. You can do this without ingredients by simply taking a moment to envision a sphere of very bright, golden-white light completely filling and encompassing your home. Mentally send any intentions you’d like into this light. You might envision and sense this light being filled with vibrations of love, light, clarity, abundance, health, and peace.
Or, you can bless the space by misting with rose water. To seal in the energy, move in a clockwise direction this time. Roses are believed to have the purest and most positive vibration of any living thing, because they vibrate to the frequency of love.
Keep the energy in your space clear and fresh, and you will definitely notice a positive difference in your life.

Hi Tess! We are looking to buy a home that had a family that went through a tragic event. We know for 2 years that the family went through a lot of grief and sadness. We don’t want the negative energy to affect our family and life so would this work to clear all that energy and sadness? Also can tragedy strike again? Could we clear the potential of any negative forces in the home? I hope that makes sense!
Tess Whitehurst says
Yes, Natalie, the home will respond to your efforts to clear. The steps in this post would be a great place to start.

Hi Tess,
In doing the selenite(crystal and sage clearing) how many days of reps?
Tess Whitehurst says
Just one is all you need to do, unless for some reason you feel you could use extra strength cleansing. Then just follow your intuition.

Hi Ress my question is my house is full of negative energy because of my so called step-father he is evil, would manipulator, he’s also on my mama harshly and talks about any and everybody he don’t even know. My mama is sick schizophrenia well I believe she has psychic intuition and gets messages from the dead that’s why she’s really on the medicine. I want to get rid of her husband and some clear however emotional turmoil I believe doing so she will be able to stand without his if I can help her.
Tess Whitehurst says
Demi, I’m not sure I understand your question. Could you rephrase it?
Jo says
I heard that when you do this to open the windows to let the negative energy clear out. Is that a good suggestion?
Tess Whitehurst says
Yes! That’s a great idea.
Jo says
Awesome, thanks! And what if I want to cleanse a room but my roommate is in there most of the time? Should I just cleanse the area outside of his room?
